Behind the Book
I don't know if you remember the recent news story about Tamara and Adriana, two New Jersey girls who were separated at birth and found out about each other at age 20. The story fascinated everyone when it hit the papers - me, included. I'm a sucker for a good separated-at-birth story, maybe because I almost have one in my own life.
I found out about my half-sister in my thirties and turned it into a book, MISTAKEN IDENTITY. (Truth is, you can't make up stuff that's crazier than what your family hands you, and when the Scottolines get going, I take notes.) In MISTAKEN, Bennie Rosato meets a woman who claims to be her twin, and much of that book was about her finding the truth. The twin - Alice Connelly - skips town, barely escaping with her life. But what happened next? Many of you, guessing correctly that Alice wasn't really dead, wrote to me and asked if she'd come back. Well, she has. In DEAD RINGER, Bennie Rosato is terrorized by Alice - who has returned for reasons I won't spoil. This time, the evil twin is trying to ruin Bennie's life, destroy her reputation, and take away everything she holds dear. Bennie has to fight back, and does - with the help of a hunky Navy SEAL. I won't tell you who wins. Or how. Why did I write DEAD RINGER, and why now? Because there is Chapter Two. In my own life, after you get over the initial shock of finding out about the stranger who happens to be your kin, you have to figure out where - and if - that person fits into your life. You have to sort out what, if anything, you mean to each other. In my case, I've had to figure that out, and I wanted Bennie to share that struggle (and misery does love company). And again, I wanted to return to the themes that underlie all of my books - justice, family, identity, and finally, love. I hope you enjoy DEAD RINGER. And just remember, the next time somebody tells you: "You have a twin!" They might be right. |
